Quick answer
Two digital accounts unlock almost all government services in Poland. Without them, you cannot file your tax return, verify your NFZ coverage, or use Polish payment systems. Most foreigners set up neither in the correct sequence.

The digital infrastructure in Poland is well-developed — if you know which tools to set up and in what order. Most foreigners arrive in Kraków with the assumption that their existing apps and digital tools will cover everything. Some will. But Profil Zaufany, BLIK, and a Polish mobile number are prerequisites for a range of administrative processes that simply cannot be completed without them. This article covers what to set up, in what order, and why each one matters.
The dependency chain runs: Polish mobile SIM first (available at the airport) → Polish bank account → The setup sequence for Profil Zaufany is covered in The Official Government Processes Guide. Missing the SIM at airport arrival means a slower setup for everything downstream.

Polish Mobile SIM — Get This at the Airport
A Polish mobile number is required immediately — do not wait until you are settled in your apartment. Polish banks require SMS verification to create accounts and authorise transactions. Profil Zaufany requires SMS verification. Most Polish two-factor authentication systems are SMS-based. Without a Polish number, these processes either cannot start or are significantly impeded.
Kraków Balice airport (KRK) has network kiosks in the arrivals area. All four main operators — Play, Orange, T-Mobile Poland, and Plus — are typically represented. A prepaid SIM (karta prepaid) requires no PESEL and costs PLN 0–20 for the SIM, with various data packages available. The exact number is not important — you will upgrade to a monthly contract once PESEL is confirmed. Get a number immediately on arrival.
Once PESEL is confirmed, switch to a monthly contract for better data allowances. Monthly plans with 50–100GB data and unlimited calls start from a monthly cost–50. Virtual operators running on the same networks — Nju Mobile (Orange), Heyah (T-Mobile), Lajt Mobile (Play) — offer lower-cost options with identical coverage.
Profil Zaufany — What It Is and How to Set It Up
Profil Zaufany is Poland's digital identity confirmation system for government services. It allows you to authenticate digitally with any Polish government platform — the tax portal (Twój e-PIT), the patient health portal (the patient portal), CEIDG for business registration, the ZUS online portal for social insurance, and dozens of other services. Without Profil Zaufany, you must attend offices in person or use paper forms for processes that are significantly faster online.
Profil Zaufany is set up through a specific route in your Polish bank's online platform. The exact steps and the sequence that must precede it are covered in The Official Government Processes Guide. specific banks, ING, specific banks, the largest retail bank, and Pekao all support creation directly from online banking. The process takes approximately 10 minutes — you confirm your identity via your bank authentication and create a Profil Zaufany linked to your bank credentials. Once created, the Profil Zaufany is valid for 3 years and works across all Polish government digital services.
There is no charge for creating or maintaining a Profil Zaufany. It is separate from your bank account — it uses your bank login as the identity verification mechanism but is a standalone government service.

Every relocation is different. The free Situation Review takes five minutes and tells you exactly which administrative steps apply to your case — and the order to do them in.
Start the Free Situation Review →BLIK — Poland's Payment System
BLIK is a mobile payment system built into Polish bank apps. It generates a 6-digit one-time code that can be used to pay online, pay in-store at terminals, and withdraw cash from ATMs without a physical card. It is the dominant payment method for online purchases from Polish retailers, food delivery apps, taxi services, and peer-to-peer transfers between Polish bank accounts.
BLIK is activated automatically within your Polish bank app — open the app, find the BLIK section, and it will be operational immediately. No separate registration. Every major Polish bank supports BLIK. You will be asked to enter a BLIK code rather than card details for most Polish app-based purchases — including Bolt (taxi), Pyszne.pl (food delivery), and various Polish e-commerce platforms. International cards work at most point-of-sale terminals, but some Polish online checkout processes do not accept them — BLIK is the workaround.

Google Translate camera mode with the Polish offline pack is essential. It translates text in real time through your phone camera — works on printed letters, restaurant menus, packaging, and street signs. An offline pack is available for use without internet connection. Quality for Polish is good for routine text; unreliable for complex legal documents.
Duolingo Polish provides basic phrase acquisition and is better than nothing if you have time. Realistically, most foreigners in Kraków function in English professionally but benefit significantly from basic Polish for administrative interactions — greetings, numbers, office vocabulary. Even minimal Polish competence — a greeting and "do you speak English?" — changes how you are received at municipal offices.
Polish official documents in Google Chrome — enable automatic page translation in Chrome settings. Many Polish government portals do not have English versions — Chrome's page translation is imperfect but functional for navigating the structures of forms and portals. Use it on the tax portal, krakow.pl, and other government sites.
Internet and Mobile Setup
The main fixed-line broadband providers in Kraków are Orange, UPC (Aster in some areas), and Vectra. Before ordering, call with your exact address to confirm the provider has infrastructure in your building — not all providers serve all buildings. 5G home routers from Play or Orange are an instant-activation alternative while waiting for fixed-line installation — a monthly cost–65/month, no installation appointment needed.
Public WiFi in Kraków is widely available in cafés, libraries, and most co-working spaces. The mKRK app provides city WiFi access points. Do not rely on public WiFi for banking or government portal access — use your mobile data for any sensitive transactions.
